Toyei Rendokan
Instructor Sheree Adams

Toyei Rendokan is a small, private dojo dedicated to preserving and teaching traditional Okinawan Shorin Ryu karate, kobudo, and jujutsu as taught by Eizo Shimabukuro, Hanshi.

Sheree Adams is a direct student of O Sensei Eizo Shimabukuro and has been teaching traditional Okinawan Karate Do since 1982. She travels yearly to Okinawa to train with O Sensei Shimabukuro and has hosted him on various occasions at training camps in Canada and the United States.

Sheree Adams started her martial arts training in Kobayashi Shorin Ryu in 1975 in her hometown of Powell River, British Columbia, Canada. In 1982 she had the good fortune to be accepted as a student of Vern Brooks of Beaverton, Oregon, a direct student of O Sensei Eizo Shimabukuro, Hanshi, Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate Do Rendokan, Ginoza son, Okinawa. She credits Brooks Sensei for the introduction to O Sensei Shimabukuro, which allowed her to become his direct student.

Sheree Adams opened her first dojo in Powell River, BC in 1982 and it has continued to be very involved in this community for 30+ years. The dojo has been under the tutelage of Sheree Adams' senior student, Alan Hernandez, since 2000 when Sheree Adams moved to Durham, North Carolina. There she started Toyei Rendokan, a dojo focused on the traditional practices of Okinawan Shorin Ryu with advanced students. In 2010 Sheree Adams moved to Austin, Texas where she now teaches in conjunction Mary Margaret Graham at their home dojo. She travels to teach her student's dojo in Powell River, BC, Canada and to Okinawa for her personal training in karate and kobudo.

In 1999 Sheree Adams was entrusted with producing O Sensei Shimbukuro's DVD series on kata, bunkai, kobudo and kumite and was honored to be his assistant with the bunkai and kumite. The footage for these DVDs was filmed in Powell River, BC when O Sensei Shimabukuro was 74 years old. While the filming was done in haste and the DVDs produced on a shoestring budget, they are a wonderful adjuvant for practitioners of Okinawan Shorin Ryu as well as an historical archive of traditional kata.

In 2008 Toyei Productions produced a DVD containing a portion of the jujutsu and empty hand knife defense of O Sensei Shimbaukuro. The filming was done at the dojo of Mary Margaret Graham in Durham, NC during his last visit to the United States. O Sensei Shimabukuro was 83 years old at the time and Sheree Adams was again honored to be his assistant. These DVDs are available through Toyei Productions www.toyei.com
