O Sensei Shimabukuro's 92nd Birthday
April 19th, 2017

On April 19th, 2017 O Sensei Shimabukuro celebrated his 92nd birthday. Mary Margaret Graham and I traveled to Okinawa to pay our respects and wish O Sensei a very happy birthday. To celebration this occasion O Sensei's family organized a demonstration of karate, kobudo, music and dance. Several of O Sensei's children are well-known and talented teachers of karate and traditional Okinawan dance and music. Mary Margaret Graham, O Sensei's great granddaughter, Ayaka and myself, performed a demonstration of karate. Eiko Shimabukuro, O Sensei's eldest son, demonstrated kobudo and played several songs on his harmonica. Ritsuko Shibahiki, O Sensei's second eldest daughter, performed several songs and dances much to everyone's delight.

O Sensei Shimabukuro thoroughly enjoyed his birthday celebration and we wish him continued good health as he goes into his 93rd year.
